Virginia Mae Avara

November 7, 1928 — July 25, 2024

Millstadt, IL

Virginia Mae Avara, nee Couch, 95, of Millstadt, IL, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024. Virginia was born on November 7, 1928, in East St. Louis, IL to Walter J. and Thema V. (Reinhardt) Couch and her parents precede her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert O. Avara and a sister, Dorothy.

Virginia grew up in East St. Louis, IL, a town she dearly loved. She graduated from East Side High School and then married her beloved husband, Robert on June 27, 1947. They then started their family. Virginia was very hard working, spending 20 years with Ritepoint Pen Company. She was a member of the Villa Hills Baptist Church and enjoyed singing at area events with the Silvertones Singing Group for many years.

In her spare time, Virginia enjoyed going camping and vacationing to the beaches of Florida. She passed the time with enjoyable hobbies such as crocheting, and she was an excellent seamstress. She was an avid reader and enjoyed working crossword puzzles. In her later years, she loved spending time at the Millstadt Senior Center. When it was time to relax, Virginia loved to watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She was very close to her grandson, Tim and enjoyed the time they spent together. Virginia will be remembered by the children of her neighborhood affectionately as the “candy lady.” They always got a smile and a piece of candy when they visited her home. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Cheryl (Gerald) Peinetti of Millstadt, IL and Connie Avara of St. Louis, MO; her grandson Tim Carron and her beloved dog, Bella in addition to many beloved friends.

Private services were held. Memorial contributions in memory of Virginia M. Avara may be directed to Millstadt Senior Center, 102 S. Jefferson St., Millstadt, IL 62260.
