Virgil 'Gene' Vollmer of Millstadt, Illinois, died Monday, April 28, 2014, at the Rosewood Care Center, Swansea, Illinois, having attained the age of 84 years, 10 months, and 1 day.
Gene was born in Belleville, Illinois, the son of William and Mayme Vollmer. He married the love of his life and his life-long partner, Martha Schwab, at St. James Church, Millstadt, Illinois, on November 9, 1949.

Gene was a mechanic who, along with his wife Martha, opened Vollmer's Garage in 1952. Gene retired in 2010. After 58 years in business. Gene served as a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Millstadt for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Millstadt Commercial Club, a former member of the Millstadt Sportsman's Club, and a former volunteer fireman.

Both Gene and Martha were proud sponsors of Vollmer's Softball Team for 30 years.

In addition to his parents and his wife Gene was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Madison Vollmer, and his siblings, William (Eleanora) Vollmer and Virginia (Clarence) Briesacher.
He is survived by his children Dan (Tammie) Vollmer, Millstadt, Illinois, Tom Vollmer, Belleville, Illinois, Marsha (Hank) Glaenzer, Millstadt, Illinois, and Sharon (Jim) Range, Millstadt, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Dan Glaenzer, Jason (Stacey) Glaenzer, Toni Glaenzer, Austin Vollmer, Landan Vollmer, Lyndsey (Ryan) Mehrtens, and Brooke Range; five great-grandchildren, Molly Mehrtens, Reese Mehrtens, Waylon Glaenzer, Cashton Glaenzer and Easton Glaenzer, nieces nephews, and many friends.

For those wishing to give a memorial in Gene's name the family has requested the donations be given to St. James Church and the Millstadt Senior Center and will be received at the funeral home.

Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 1, 2014, and from 9:00 A.M. to 9:45 A.M. on Friday, May 2, 2014, at the Creason Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Thursday as well as a walk through by the Millstadt Fire Department. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. at St James Catholic Church, Millstadt, Illinois, with Monsignor Marvin Volk officiating. Burial will follow at Mt Evergreen Cemetery, Millstadt, Illinois.
