Richard Fred 'Smitty' Smith



Richard Fred 'Smitty' Smith, 84, of Belleville, Ill., born June 26, 1927 in St. Louis, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Belleville, Ill.

'Smitty' was a member of Signal Hill United Methodist Church, a longtime janitor at Signal Hill School District. He was also a volunteer with the Northwest Fire Department, a member of the St. Clair County Historical Society, a volunteer for the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a troop leader for Boy Scout Troop 530, a member of the St. Clair County Amateur Radio Club, a member of the Belleville Camera Club, and served on the 175 and 200 year Belleville Anniversary Committees.

'Smitty' was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Emma, nee Nicks, Smith.

He is survived by cousins Ann (Thomas) Bommarito of Indianapolis, Ind. and Robert (Betty) Nicks, of Gerard, Mo.; and many friends in west Belleville.

Memorials may be made to the Signal Hill United Methodist Church and will be received by the funeral home.

Visitation: Friends may call from 10 to 11 AM on Friday, October 14, 20-11, at the Signal Hill United Methodist Church 47 Signal Hill Place, Belleville, Illinois.

.Funeral: Funeral Services will be at 11:AM on Friday, October 14, 2011, at Signal Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow at Mt Hope Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
