Michael P. Magers, 79, of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 3:13 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Three Springs Senior Living and Rehabilitation in Chester, Illinois. He was born to the late Henry and Rachel (nee Moll) Magers on March 17, 1945, in Red Bud, Illinois.
Michael married Donna Kueker Schuwerk on October 11, 1980 in Chester, Illinois; she survives.
Michael “Big Mike” worked a short stint at the GM Corvette plant in St Louis, a number of years as a carpenter, and eventually retired as a correctional officer from Menard Correctional Center.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 487, Eagles Aerie 3252 ( since 1975), and Moose Lodge 1764 (since 1973) in Chester.
As a younger man Mike enjoyed dirt track racing and boating on local lakes and rivers. He also learned auto body and vehicle restoration work at the old A&M Body Shop, a skill his step-sons benefitted from and much appreciated later on.
Later in life Mike found his greatest joy in being known as Papa to Will and Luke. He devoted many hours over the years waiting at bus stops but looked forward to every single one rain or shine. He frequently enjoyed 4-wheeler ventures across the field to “check on the boys and the dogs” at their home.
