Margaret Esther Whalen of St. Louis passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at her home having attained the age of 85 years, 5 months and 11 days.

Born in St. Louis on May 1, 1923, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Esther (Reibert) Brendle. She was united in marriage to Richard Michael Whalen on January 26, 1946 at Holy Family Church in St. Louis and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Whalen was a cashier for the City of St. Louis for 23 years and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and her husband were one son, Richard 'Rickey' Whalen; four brothers, Dillman Brendle, Lawrence Brendle, William Brendle and Jordan Brendle and one sister, Mary Catherine Schroeder.

Survivors include her children, Peggy (Ralph) Kroeck and John 'Jack' (Sherry) Whalen of St. Louis; two sisters, Esther Bixler and Barbara Naeger of St. Charles; four grandchildren, Trisha (Shawn) Coleman, Tiffany Kroeck, Richard Whalen and Erin Whalen; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Abigael Coleman; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 11:30 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in St. Louis with Father Rice officiating. Interment will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.

Friends may call on Thursday, October 16, 2008 from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and on Friday, October 17, 2008 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Southern Funeral Home, 6322 South Grand Boulevard. Memorials may be made to the donors choice.
