Monsignor James P. OConnell


Monsignor James P. OConnell of St. Louis passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Mother of Good Counsel Home having attained the age of 91 years, 3 months and 5 days.

Born September 19, 1917 in St. Louis, he was the son of the late James and Katherine (Leary) OConnell.Monsignor OConnell was a Catholic priest with the Archdiocese of St. Louis for 55 years and a veteran of the United States Army. He served as parish priest at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church from 1953 to 1962, Christ the King Catholic Church from 1962 to 1964, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church from 1964 to 1970 and Saints Mary and Joseph Catholic Church from 1970-1992. He also served on the Archdiocese Insurance Commission from 1965 to 1982.

Preceding him in death besides his parents were his sisters, Mary K. OConnell and Margaret M. OConnell and his brother, Patrick OConnell in infancy.

Survivors include his cousins and many friends.

Friends may call on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at St. John Catholic Church, 15 Plaza Square. Memorials may be made in the form of masses or to Mother of Good Counsel Home and will be received at the funeral home.

A mass of Christian burial will be on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
