James Martin McTigue, Sr., 79, of Hecker, IL passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday November 16, 2023, in Belleville, IL. James was born on January 24, 1944, in East St. Louis, IL to John P. and Mary McTigue, Sr., nee Butts and his parents precede him in death. He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Grace Gibson, his brother, William McTigue, his brothers-in-law, Virgil Massey and James Gibson and his sister-in-law, Teresa Gibson.
In 1962 James entered the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country. After his term of service, he began working for Norfolk-Southern Railroad as a clerk-a career that would last for 32 years. James was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball. He also loved watching game shows and westerns. Most of all, he loved spending time with his friends and family. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. James’ family was the center of his life, and they will deeply miss him.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 years, Paula McTigue, nee Gibson, his children: Theresa (Mark) Shoemaker, Shannon (James) Boucher, James (Tara) McTigue, Jr. and Christopher McTigue; his siblings: John (Dora) McTigue, Jr., Mary (the late Virgil) Massey, Marilyn Mayberry and brother-in-law, Joseph (Jenny) Gibson; his grandchildren: Sara (Justin) Malray, Erin Shoemaker, Lucas Thomas, Liam McTigue and Makenna McTigue; his great-grandchildren, Weston and Kenleigh in addition to many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday November 22, 2023, at 1:30pm at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Paderborn, IL (4576 Buss Branch Road, behind St. Michael’s Catholic Church) with Msgr. Carl Scherrer, officiating.
