Ernest A. Skaer

Ernest “Ernie” A. Skaer, 84, of Waterloo, IL, passed away on Thursday July 4, 2024, in St. Louis, MO. Ernie was born on November 24, 1939, in Red Bud, IL to Orlin and Annie (Helfrich) Skaer and his parents precede him in death. He was also preceded in death by his uncle Arthur Helfrich and his cousin Eilene Helfrich. 

Ernie was born and raised in Floraville, IL. During his working years, he spent 17 years at Empire Stove Company and then owned and operated his auto body repair shop for 40 years until his retirement. He was a member of both St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, IL and St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Paderborn, IL and a past member of the Millstadt Jaycees.

In his spare time, Ernie enjoyed working on model trains. He was also a gun collector and a Corvette enthusiast; he loved fast cars. Ernie was very social and enjoyed visiting with people at various area events and liked to take relaxing day trips. He was especially close to his cousins, having grown up with them, they held a special place in his life. 

Left to cherish his memory are his sons: Dennis Skaer and Michael (Debra) Skaer, his cousins: Elaine, Arlou, Bernita, Shirlene, Virgil and Doris; his grandchildren: Kristen (Matthew) Chadduck, Kaitlyn (Justin) Gray, Kathryn (Ben) Steppig and Klayton (Taylor) Skaer; his great-grandchildren: Nolan and Nora Chadduck, Scarlett Gray and Bentley Skaer, in addition to many beloved friends. Ernie will be remembered as a loving father, cousin, grandfather, great-grandfather and dear friend of many. 

Visitation will be held on Monday July 22, 2024, from 11:00am-1:00pm at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 4576 Buss Branch Rd (Paderborn) Waterloo, IL 62298. Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Fr. Stan Konieczny, will follow at 1:00pm and inurnment will then take place in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in memory of Ernest A. Skaer may be directed to St. Michael’s Catholic Church and will be collected at the church.
