Clare Borgia Tissier
Clare Borgia Tissier of Fairview Heights passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2010 in Belleville, having attained the age of 87 years, 1 month and 3 days.
Born on December 31, 1922 in East St. Louis, Illinois, she was the daughter of Louis F. and Clara (Metzger) Tissier. She married Harold Schlattweiler and to this union three children were born. She later married Charles Stange, who preceded her in death and also was married to Charles Spicuzza.
Clare worked in Washington D. C. at the White House during World War II and had the privilege of attending the final inauguration of Franklin Roosevelt. Following the war she returned home, married and raised her family. She returned to the workforce as a secretary having worked at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows and other area churches. She was an avid volunteer serving at food banks and the Red Cross. She founded 'Our Store' where food and clothing were donated to low income families in return for a few hours of service in the 'Store'. She helped found the 'Fellowship For Christian Singles' and the 'Metro East Social Singles' clubs in the 1970's. She taught religion to the mentally challenged at St. Phillips School in East St. Louis and St. Marys School in Belleville.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Charles Stange; four sisters, Margaret Hayes, Marie Amorso, Kay Mulligan and Bee Lyle and four brothers, Louis E. Tissier, Al Tissier, Frank Tissier and Greg Tissier.
Survivors include her children, Eugene (Barbara) Schlattweiler, Mary Trobaugh of Fairview Heights and Richard (Cathy) Schlattweiler; her grandchildren, Nathan (Brandi) Schlattweiler, Christopher Schlattweiler, Michael Carrigan, Michele Gessner, Jayson Schlattweiler and Jessica Schlattweiler; her great-grandchildren, Troy Michael Gessner, John Robert Gessner and Jackson Schlattweiler; her sister, Virginia (Walter) Slattery of Belleville; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, former husbands and dear friends.
As an ultimate act of giving Clare donated her body to St. Louis University School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Belleville. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. The Creason Funeral Home in Millstadt is in charge of arrangements.
